Meet Seema, expert at finishing wooden handicrafts

In this article we are proud to introduce one of our best wooden handicrafts Artisans – Seema.

As a child growing up in Uttar Pradesh in India, Seema lost her father at a young age and watched her mother struggle to raise her siblings and her. As is often seen in impoverished families, early marriage of the daughter seemed to be the only way for the family to survive. Thus, like millions of women in similar situations, Seema too was married off early. but, that marriage did not last and young Seema, armed with education only till Grade 8,  found herself alone with her young son.

Without any vocational skills or formal training, without completing even high-school level education, Seema’s life seemed to headed downhill with no hope in sight. That’s when Asha Handicrafts stepped in.

She found employment with Asha Handicrafts Association’s artisan group in Saharanpur. We took Seema under our wing and trained her in the art of woodwork and handicrafts. She is now skilled at finishing handicraft items like wooden caskets, jewellery boxes, bangle stands and trinket boxes. now we can proudly say that she is one of the best wooden handicrafts Artisans

Her work is a testimony to her attention to detail and finishing ability. It is thanks to workers like Seema that we can make sure that every piece of wooden handicrafts boasts of not just great design and Indian heritage, but also adherence to high quality and finish, the hallmark of all products of Asha Handicrafts.

Today, Seema is in a happier space. She raises her son single-handedly and dreams of earning enough to equip him with a good education and a bright future. We at Asha Handicrafts are proud to have her on our team and support hundreds like her to overcome adversity and achieve her dreams.

Thanks to a growing demand worldwide for handcrafted products that express stories of Indian heritage, our artisans now have regular work, are paid fair wages and can send their children to school. Their future generations will not have to struggle with poverty and will have a fair shot at their dreams.

You too can be a part of this journey of empathy. Every product that you buy from Asha Handicrafts goes a long way in supporting Indian artisans like Seema and can empower her to fulfil her dreams.
